How to Care for Your Flowers: Tips from Susan Avery
Fresh flowers deserve a little attention to reach their full potential. With the right care, most of our hand-tied bouquets will last 7–10 days — here's how to get the most from every arrangement.
Change the water every two days
Fresh water is the single most important thing you can do. Bacteria builds up quickly and blocks the stems, shortening the life of your flowers significantly. Empty the vase, rinse it, and refill with clean, cool water every second day.
Trim the stems at a 45° angle
Each time you change the water, trim 1–2cm from the base of each stem at a 45° angle. This increases the surface area for water uptake and removes any sealed or decaying tissue. Use sharp scissors or a clean knife — never tear.
Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight
Flowers last longest in a cool, shaded spot. Avoid placing arrangements near windows in direct sun, heating vents, or appliances that generate warmth. A cool room overnight will significantly extend their life.
Avoid ripening fruit
Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which accelerates the ageing of flowers. Keep your arrangement well away from the fruit bowl.
Remove wilting blooms promptly
As individual stems begin to fade, remove them from the arrangement. This keeps the water clean and allows the remaining flowers to continue opening fully.
